Horsetail Firefall

“Horsetail Falls is a small seasonal waterfall that only appears in late winter and early spring. It flows over the east side of El Capitan, so as a backdrop it has one of the most impressive walls of granite in the entire park. Then – only for part of February, and only when the sky is clear – the very last sunrays of the day selectively linger on the falls, lighting it up with a golden glow that makes the water look like lava.”

Beautiful :) Yosemite :)

The Bloody Truth: How to Interpret Blood Spatters (via wiredscience)

1 Angular If the victim was on the move, drops hit at an angle. The more oblique the impact, the longer the drop’s tail. The head points in the direction the person was traveling.
2 High Velocity Misty, diffuse spatter is created by external force greater than 100 feet per second — which usually means a gunshot, an explosion, or (seriously) a sneeze.
3 Hair Impact A traumatic impact between head and surface tends to leave a stain with feathered edges, like someone squished a loaded paintbrush against the wall.
4 Hair Swipe If the smear fades out in one direction, the head was likely bloody before contact. The lightest edge of the swipe points in the direction the head was traveling.
5 Fabric Swipe More fluid than hair swipes, these stains sometimes display the imprint of the bloodied clothing. T-shirt weaves are often the easiest patterns to decipher.

Interesting :)

Diamonds Aren’t an Investor’s Best Friend - WSJ.com

“Diamonds are a marketing gimmick as much as anything else. Most men feel they have to give a diamond ring when they propose—even though, as anyone knows after a moment’s thought, the only woman worth buying a ring for is the one who doesn’t care how much you spent on her ring. The biggest winner in the diamond game is the Oppenheimer family, which runs De Beers, the Standard Oil of the diamond world.Nicholas Oppenheimer, the billionaire in charge of the company, admitted this week that most of the sales growth in the U.S. over the past decade has been the result of clever marketing campaigns. There’s no logical reason why you should have to cut a check to Mr. Oppenheimer’s family, or even to their competitors, in order to ask your girlfriend to marry you on Sunday. But you probably will anyway. Most of us do. Marketing is a powerful thing.Russell Shor, senior industry analyst at the Gemological Institute of America, has some advice. Pear-shaped diamonds can often seem bigger than round ones of the same number of carats, he says. And small differences in clarity are often less visible to the naked eye than differences in color.”

As this graph shows, diamonds have been a terrible investment over the past 30 years. You might think that a diamond ring would rise in value over time, but no… it’s just money sitting there that could otherwise be used for something else. It’s one of the great cons that everyone should buy one - if I was a girl, I’d tell my guy not to spend a lot - I’d feel stupid with some expensive rock that never rises in value…
Having said that … of course it’s possible diamonds may rise in the future… I can only infer that diamonds are plentiful enough that we haven’t reached any sort of shortage yet - this is in stark contrast to gold which is marketed as a substitute for money and whose value has skyrocketed…

Most men feel they have to give a diamond ring when they propose—even though, as anyone knows after a moment’s thought, the only woman worth buying a ring for is the one who doesn’t care how much you spent on her ring.
The biggest winner in the diamond game is the Oppenheimer family, which runs De Beers, the Standard Oil of the diamond world.
Nicholas Oppenheimer, the billionaire in charge of the company, admitted this week that most of the sales growth in the U.S. over the past decade has been the result of clever marketing campaigns.
There’s no logical reason why you should have to cut a check to Mr. Oppenheimer’s family, or even to their competitors, in order to ask your girlfriend to marry you on Sunday. But you probably will anyway. Most of us do. Marketing is a powerful thing.
Russell Shor, senior industry analyst at the Gemological Institute of America, has some advice.

Plitvicka Jezera National Park is one of Earth’s jewels. This mountain valley holds many large emerald lakes, each of which drains into the next in spectacular series of waterfalls.

This pic is pretty famous. It’s been blogged about a lot, but this is the first time that someone has put the location on the pic. Turns out this national park is in Croatia, and the color of the water is constantly changing based on the mineral content. I think it’d be great to experience this in person….

Anyway, I think there’s something to be said for a kind of “interviewing” process, and I think that it seems less desperate than falling into a relationship. It’s just like, okay, we talk all the time, we spend all of our time together, we have sex… Let’s just call it a relationship. (Not to say that all relationships that start this way are bad, that’s far from the case.)
What happens if you date for a few years? Are you just going to fall into marriage as well? That happened to a friend of a friend. It happened to a family member of mine. And you know what? Neither of those relationships have any passion. In both of those marriages, there’s someone who wants out but doesn’t want to hurt the other person.
With the interviewing process — and I hate calling it that but that is what it is — you’re getting what you want. You can still do that in a casual way without it seeming so “these are my requirements, do you fit them” about it. With this method, I feel like it’s just going after what you want rather than settling for what’s there, just because it’s there. If you’re out meeting other people, you’re less likely to dwell on someone who’s all right but is just there. You can find someone you LIKE.

Hmm….yeah, a little, but I just feel like most of your interview questions usually get answered in natural conversation…and if you have an “interview” frame of mind when you’re talking to people, you’ll have less fun….
Also, thx for your perspective in general ; it was interesting to hear that story about your friend … I know what you mean about chance sometimes playing too big of a role….

hookingupinhanguk:

I just finished reading this, and it has a wealth of information that would be extremely useful to any single person, not just straight girls (as long as you’re okay with reading a bright pink book). It’s really easy to read, and is very well-organized. She also doesn’t sound like a huge douchebag like a lot of the guy PUAs do.
Here are some things that stood out:
- She offers a lot of opener examples. These are generally questions that a guy could answer (“My friend went on a date with a guy, and he wants her to meet his friends for the second date. Is that too soon?” or “My friends and I are arguing over who is the best James Bond. What do you think?”) Whatever. The content doesn’t matter much. What does matter is to make sure it is an opinion and not a simple yes or no question, so that you can build rapport.
- Be neutral when opening. Don’t make eye contact with someone before you approach them. It has to look like you just happened to be near them and needed their opinion on something, or wanted to know the time or something. If you express interest, it becomes awkward, boring, you look desperate, and the person being hit is now in the position of power. You don’t want the person to know you’re hitting on them. (Other PUAs also say to add a time constraint to avoid this. “I can only stay for a few minutes, but I was wondering if…”)
- Phones are lame. (This seems to be less of a problem in Korea where people love to text.) It makes sense, though. You meet someone, get their number. Wait a few days to call, miss them and leave a message, wait, wait, wait, and lose interest. She suggests that when it’s time to part, make a date then and there. “Actually, I’m not big on phones. What’s your schedule like this week?” Then exchange numbers just in case.
- Increase your numbers. Many girls believe that there aren’t enough good guys around, which isn’t true. If you are meeting more guys, you have a much higher chance of finding the good ones. (This is especially relevant for us in Korea who don’t speak fluent Korean. The more you meet, the more likely you are to find someone who you can communicate well with.)
- If a guy does anything you don’t like, he flakes, is an asshole, DROP him. By increasing your numbers, it is much easier to find a guy that fits your requirements. She says to make your “List” of things that you absolutely will not settle for, and things that your perfect mate can’t be without. (Examples include: height, religion, intelligence, etc. It can be anything that is important to you, just make sure it is on your List for the right reasons.) For me, I have certain preferences regarding a guy’s dress and appearance, but feeling an attraction can trump those. I do, however, know I could never seriously be with a hardcore Republican. That would go on my List.
- Screen for the important things ASAP (but as subtley as possible). It is much better to find out he is not what you’re looking for in the first thirty minutes, rather than on the second date. And if something is necessary to you, don’t settle for anything less! If you really only want to marry a Jewish guy, don’t continue to date a Catholic just because you don’t think you can find someone else. She suggests meeting as many people as possible so it’s not as easy to settle.
- Last, but not least: be confident!
Next I’m reading a book about the science of sex. I’m filling my brain up with lots of useful info in my time of abstinence so that I’ll be ready to take over Seoul when I return. Ye-yeah!

First off, this is a great book summary, and it’s thought provoking, and thank you for posting it. My 2c:
First off I can empathize with the desire for some girls to use techniques to meet guys - however, I think it’s the wrong approach. Let’s start with the premise that you actually have to devote all this time to interviewing guys - to me that kind of smells of desperation. I’m not sure it’s the right thing to do. I actually feel like girls would be a lot more successful if they just embraced two of the values that my ex believes in who is super successful at picking up guys. First of all she likes having fun and sharing things. If she’s out, she’ll just share something about her life - it’s a great way to build a rapport - or she’ll just joke around and have fun. That’s builds trust. Second, she doesn’t really even look for relationships - it’s sort of the last thing on her mind. She tends to fall into them. I think that’s actually a better approach.

This is just staggering. The same article says “ The Association of Zoos and Aquariums estimates that up to 12,000 tigers are being kept as private pets in the USA”
Who are these people? Why don’t we see their tigers and lions frolicking about on their lawns?
This is a whole slide show of big cat love - oh and also chimp love, hyena love, and more…
The big cat owners give you all sorts of helpful tips like:

don’t stand against the side of the cage. Like any other cat they want to say hello and any cat will always give you a rub against your leg. The white tigers are 600 pounds and if you are standing next to the side of the cage then when it comes up to say hello then it will break your hip.

“Um, right now I’m trying to just finish my record and getting through the last season of Gossip Girl for right now. So not so much thinking about that.”

We’ve Been Wrong About Fish Gills All Along!
They are not primarily for respiration, or breathing rather they evolved for removal or toxins and regulation of the proper concentrations of elements in the body.
Clarice Fu, a zoologist from the University of British Columbia in Canada, led the study and publisher her results in the Royal Society Journal, Proceedings.
When Dr. Fu studies fish larvae she noticed that when very young most of the respiration occurred transdermally (across the skin) and the gills were primarily used for excretion of ions such as sodium, chloride and potassium. It was not until the larvae enlarged such that the surface to volume ratio of these larvae rendered it more difficult to exchange sufficient ions through the skin. At this point gas exchange switches to the gill.
What does this mean?
Well, 2 things really:
1) The organ we refer to as “the gill” is evolutionarily more closely related to the kidney than, what we has previously thought, the lung.
2) We must continue to keep our minds agape, operating under the assumption that, we know very little. Further, that what we do know, may very well be incorrect.

Hahaha, this was just funny to me… I found the original article….it divides the amount Google and Microsoft are paying Twitter by the total number of tweets to come up with a value per tweet… well you could argue that’s an incorrect premise as there are many ways to monetize a tweet…. you know there are so many articles that are full of BS - it’s funny to see one that was actually completely retracted….
It was kind of shocking to me that some people could make 10,000$ per tweet….

Sean Rad, chief executive of Beverly Hills-based ad network Ad.ly, has signed up 20,000 Twitter users who get paid for placing ads in their tweets. To determine the size of the payments, the startup has developed algorithms that measure a person’s influence. Reality TV star Kim Kardashian, with almost 3 million followers, gets $10,000 per tweet, while business blogger Guy Kawasaki fetches $900 per tweet to his 200,000 fans.
