L’Arbre du Ténéré (Tree of Ténéré)

[The tree] was once considered the most isolated tree on Earth — the only one within more than 200 kilometres (120 mi). It was a landmark on caravan routes through the Ténéré region of the Sahara in northeast Niger — so well known that it and the Arbre Perdu or ‘Lost Tree’ to the north are the only trees to be shown on a map at a scale of 1:4,000,000.

Before, this tree was green and with flowers; now it is a colourless thorn tree and naked. I cannot recognise it — it had two very distinct trunks. Now there is only one, with a stump on the side, slashed, rather than cut a metre from the soil. What has happened to this unhappy tree? Simply, a lorry going to Bilma has struck it… but it has enough space to avoid it… the taboo, sacred tree, the one which no nomad here would have dared to have hurt with his hand… this tree has been the victim of a mechanic…^[4]

Save the Elephants: STOP BLOODY IVORY

This week, two countries are seeking to break the worldwide ban on ivory trading — a decision that could wipe out whole elephant populations and bring these magnificent animals closer to extinction.

But many African states and conservationists support extending the ban on elephant-slaughtering ivory trade. The decision will be made at a UN meeting in Doha on 13 March, and global public opinion could tip the balance!

gameQuery.

Built out of jQuery, gameQuery aims to make game development easier without the dependencies of Flash or executables.  Features include multi-layer sprite animation, collision detection, and swappable sound, among others.  It might be a while off, but browsers are getting better at rendering Javascript with each milestone.  I had no trouble rendering any of the demos, and it was quite impressive.

BTW, if you are looking to develop similar games in Flash, I strongly recommend Flixel, the Actionscript gaming extension.

Underwater Skyscraper.

Water-Scraper is an interesting approach to population growth, given that our seas are slowly rising.  It is a futuristic idea from eVolo’s 2010 skyscraper competition. Being a nerd and having seen every episode of SeaQuest and SeaLab 2021, I fully support this architecture design.  It looks like a giant jelly fish and each scraper is self sustaining. Thanks Inhabitat!

Meanwhile, she shoved her tiny husband into a chair in the righthand corner of the scene, near the dog. Like a girl playing with a dollhouse, she set up a new social order, one that displayed both her clout (she’s friendly, even flirtatious, with a prince!) and her artfulness (she stands near her pot of glue and paper knife).
